Cape Cod - It's One Big Clambake. If you're a fan of New
England's most beloved peninsula, this is the tshirt for you. Design
features the bold slogan along with a couple of lobster claws, gripping the
letters for good measure. You know that once you cross the Bourne or Sagamore
Bridge, you can leave your troubles "off-Cape" and let the good times roll.
According to Chris:
I've been to Cape Cod a few times, and I really
like it. My main impression -- it was a lot less touristy/kitschy, and a
lot more genuine and bucolic than I expected. I first went out there on a
2-day trip with a girlfriend, and we made it out as far as Chatham, which I've
revisited and is my favorite place on the Cape -- it's out on "The Elbow" -- and
it's just a beautiful town. The first time I was there, I bought a
baseball cap from The Chatham Squire, a
great bar/restaurant, which I loved. I was really sad when I lost the hat
about a year later, and thrilled when I got to re-buy one 7 years later! I
also had a giant Stuffed Quahog
there, which is a gigantic clam stuffed with chopped clam, bread crumbs, and
other seafood. Delish. Anyway, on my most recent trip, with my
friend Heidi (Miss Boston), I finally, finally made it to the very end of Cape
Cod, and the tower out by Provincetown and the "Province Lands Visitor Center" -
really beautiful. One quick note of disappointment here. I have been
to the Western End of US Highway 6, in Bishop, California. Driving east
out of Bishop in 2002, I pulled over in the middle of the desert to snap a
picture of the sign reading "PROVINCETOWN,
MA 3,205 MILES" -- so here I am, finally 3,205 miles on the other end,
and... NOTHING. No sign saying End US6, no sign saying 3,205 to Bishop, the road
just peters out into a cul-de-sac, no fanfare. Cape Codders, you've got to do
something about that. I'll pitch in for the monument!
Anyway, I've also gone to the beach at Truro, had
lunch in Wellfleet, and pretty much stopped in every town on 28 and 6A. I
also really liked Hyannis and Falmouth (ok, those are a little touristy), I ate
dinner at Mashpee Commons, and I got to see Woods Hole -- there is no "hole"
there, I looked for it -- which is the same story as Jackson Hole (See "Wyoming,
Area Code 307") -- and got a glimpse of Martha's Vineyard, which I hope to visit
soon. And... oh yeah...
I WENT TO A CLAMBAKE! Heidi and her friends,
family, like 200 people from the town, went down to a beach, built a pit, built
a fire, put seaweed in it, everyone put their food into pillowcases or burlap
sacks, and a few hours later, it was a feast of clams, lobster, sausage, corn on
the cob, potatoes, the whole nine. And I do like lobster, but it was a TON
of work, me fumbling and cutting myself on the shell, to get about 3 good
mouthfuls... I think I'll just pay the $32.95 next time to have the restaurant
do it for me! But it was a really fun time, and for a couple of days at
least, I really had the true Cape Cod experience. Cape Cod, you rock!
Can't wait to get back.
